The Story

Gahaya Links was founded in 2004 by sisters Joy Ndungutse and Janet Nkubito, two Rwandan women who saw basket weaving as a path to reconciliation after the 1994 genocide. Starting with 27 weavers from both Hutu and Tutsi backgrounds, Gahaya Links now employs over 4,000 women across 40 cooperatives. Their Agaseke baskets β€” Rwanda's symbol of peace β€” are sold at Macy's, Walmart, and Anthropologie through the Rwanda Fair Trade program. Featured by CNN's African Voices and honored by the Clinton Global Initiative.
