Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu

SoleRebels โ€” The world's first Fair Trade footwear brand

In 2004, Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu started SoleRebels in her grandmother's village of Zenabwork โ€” one of Addis Ababa's poorest communities. She saw opportunity where others saw waste: old car tires burned in piles could become soles for shoes. She recruited local artisans who hand-stitched sandals from recycled tires, organic Ethiopian cotton, and sabdariffa fiber.

Within 7 years, SoleRebels became the world's first Fair Trade-certified footwear brand, sold in 30+ countries. Bethlehem was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011, featured in Forbes, CNN, and Vogue, and addressed the Clinton Global Initiative. The company has created 1,200+ permanent jobs with full healthcare โ€” manufacturing remains 100% in Ethiopia.

Joy Ndungutse & Janet Nkubito

Gahaya Links โ€” Weaving peace after genocide

In 2004, two Rwandan sisters โ€” Joy Ndungutse and Janet Nkubito โ€” had an audacious idea: basket weaving could heal a shattered nation. Ten years after the 1994 genocide, they gathered 27 women from both Hutu and Tutsi backgrounds in a small workshop in Nyanza. The women sat side by side, weaving Agaseke baskets โ€” Rwanda's ancient symbol of welcome and peace.

Today, Gahaya Links employs over 4,000 women across 40 cooperatives. Their baskets are sold at Macy's, Walmart, and Anthropologie through the Rwanda Fair Trade program. The sisters were honored by the Clinton Global Initiative and featured on CNN's African Voices. Every basket carries the woven story of a woman who rebuilt her life through art.

Kathy Marshall

Sabahar โ€” Ethiopia's only Fair Trade silk atelier

Kathy Marshall, a Canadian who fell in love with Ethiopia, founded Sabahar in 2008 with a radical mission: revive Ethiopia's ancient silk tradition. She discovered that Ethiopia's climate is perfect for silkworms โ€” the highlands offer ideal temperatures and abundant mulberry. She built a workshop in Kality where women spin silk by hand, weave on traditional looms, and dye with natural pigments from onion skins, coffee, and marigold.

Sabahar is now Ethiopia's only WFTO-certified (World Fair Trade Organization) textile company, employing 80+ full-time artisans โ€” most of them women who had never earned an income before. Each piece is fully traceable: from the silkworm cocoon to the final weave. Their towels, scarves, and home goods are sold in 15 countries.

TOMOCA Coffee โ€” 70 years of roasting
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡นWavel Street, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Costa Tome

TOMOCA โ€” Ethiopia's oldest specialty coffee roastery

In 1953, an Italian entrepreneur named Costa Tome opened a small roastery on Wavel Street in Addis Ababa. He imported a drum roaster from Italy and named his business TOMOCA โ€” Torrefazione Moderna Caffรฉ. At the time, almost all Ethiopian coffee was exported raw. Tome's radical idea: roast coffee in Ethiopia, for Ethiopians, and export the finished product.

70 years later, that same Italian drum roaster is still in use โ€” carefully maintained by three generations of roasters. The aroma of roasting coffee drifts from the Wavel Street shop every morning, drawing locals and tourists alike. TOMOCA now exports to 15+ countries and remains a family business, proving that quality and heritage outlast every trend.

NKWO Onwuka

NKWO โ€” Turning textile waste into couture

NKWO Onwuka is a Nigerian fashion designer who saw the future in the past. In 2011, she founded NKWO in Lagos with a radical concept: transform Africa's textile waste โ€” discarded denim, factory offcuts, secondhand clothes dumped in West African markets โ€” into high fashion. She developed a proprietary technique called "NKWO Felt" that hand-felts recycled fibers into fabric.

Her breakthrough came in 2012 when she won the Vogue Italy "Who is On Next" prize, launching her onto the global stage. She has since shown at London Fashion Week and Arise Fashion Week. Her workshop employs 25 artisans who upcycle textile waste into couture-grade Adire pieces โ€” proving that African fashion can be both luxurious and sustainable.
